A couple of days ago, I came across this article in the Huffington Post, entitled "Strong is the New Pretty". It struck me for a number of reasons. First of all, it featured the images of a photographer who I have recently grown to admire: Kate T. Parker. She is just plain old great at what she does - which is documenting her daughter's lives in stunning imagery - and I'm a big fan. Secondly, I love the message put forth in the article: that our girls "don't need to be pretty, perfect or compliant to be loved." As I looked through the black + white photos of Kate's strong and spunky daughters, I began to wish I had similar photos of my own daughter. "Wait a minute", I thought. "There's that one photo I took of her last fall, yeah, the one with the tattoo... That's strong."
The more I looked through my catalogue of photos, the more 'strong girl' images I came across. I had no trouble finding them, maybe because I have always tried to capture her personality, which is not one that leans towards princesses, tutus or trying to be perfectly put together all of the time. My daughter is smart, spunky, athletic + almost always happy to just be herself. Compliant is not a word I would use to describe her; in fact, there is rarely a day that goes by in which we don't argue, but there is no other way I'd have her be. She is one of the strongest + most beautiful little girls I know.
And thus began my own personal collection of "Strong is the New Pretty" images... I can't wait to see what other goodies await with this monkey of mine. I sure hope my little muse stays spunky + strong for me - for a long, long time.
And you, do you have a strong girl in your life? Are you taking the time to capture the unique and powerful aspects of her personality? If not - like my daughter would say - WHAT are you waiting for?!!?
